Tidying up

There comes a time when I cannot stand the mess any longer and just have to tidy things up.  Started with the box of variegated/overdyed threads...will need a larger box though because I still have some of these to wind.
Stef Francis threads still to wind off on to card
My no. 3 and 5 perles were a mess just tied through holes on cardboard and left dangling which meant that over time they keep getting tangled.  The same with my many fine wool threads.
last of the perles to be wound

tidy perles

Now that I have made a big effort in winding them off onto cards cant believe how few of the perles there are...I always felt that I had masses of them....well if I include the 8's which are in yet another box, then I guess I do.  Haven't even thought of the rayon threads, and then there is a box of crochet threads....do we all go through stages of wondering how well off financially we would be if we did not do sewing for a hobby.
where did these come from
enough here for two of us when I finish

oops forgot about these tapestry wools and odds and ends
I knew I had a lot of  fine wool threads from doing baby blankets for the grandchildren and then the needlepainting but who needs so many.   I have divided them up and there was enough for Di to have her own box to reduce the stash. Saves her carrying the large box they were in back and forth.

After my recent buying spree, there were a lot of loose packets of beads on the shelf, so bought some more stacker containers, and presto all is neat and I can see my beads and trinkets at a glance.

Now that I have all this tidiness happening something drastically needs to be done about the shelves and cupboards themselves being re-organised.  And of course we will not open the cupboard in the next photo for the time being....that might wait until I have had a holiday.  When it is all done I will be able to post some photos of my sewing room before it gets all messy again.

Sorry this post is a bit topsy turvy but blogger seems to want to do his own thing with the arrangement of the photos and text.

I was playing in my threads today, too, and did a bit of re-organizing. Now I get to stitch bullions!

  6. Oh dear Shirley, what a great feeling that must be. I seriously need to do something to mine as well. I would not dare share any pictures of the cupboards, they are too messy!! It's a good feeling though when you finally feel you've achieved something. I love those little bead containers, usually buy a few when I'm away, always need them.

  9. I've been winding my threads onto cards too - well I started last year [or maybe the year before], got bored..... do one or two now and then ....will get there in the end. But they do look nice when they all wound and it is much easier to find the colour you are looking for. Keep up the good work.

  10. Oh yes, I try not to think about the dollars when going through my art/craft stuff. We would probably have been able to do a world trip:-)
You have really done a nice job of tidying. Are you sure you are not a virgo???

  12. That was a big task Shirley, you must have breathed a sigh of relief when you finished. Interesting you wind on card, when I buy threads that are in hanks I usually plait them which means I have lots of threads all one length but if I need a very long one I am in a mess.
My perle threads I buy by the ball not hanks so do not have a problem with them. You have reminded me I have a box of fine wools somewhere but it is so long since I used them I had forgotten them.
We would all be much better of financially without spending on threads, books, fabrics and everything else that goes with our craft but we would not be nearly as happy and how would we fill our days surely not with housework!

  13. Well done, Shirley! It is so lovely to have all the threads tidy.
When I see mine all nice and tidy, I want to do something with them. Before I know they get taken out for this project and that project, and end up all over the place again!

  14. Hi, Shirley. Great idea to put threads onto cards. Your collection looks very tidy now. I've been admiring your TAST samples and they're all beautiful, but I think the French knot design is simply smashing--very elegant.

  15. It has taken me a while to catch up on you blog, you have certainly been busy! I had a VERY big tidyup of the mess on my tables, in fact every horizontal surface in my sewing room, but I haven't tackled the thread drawers yet! I keep saying that is a job for after my knee, but I may yet find another reason to put it off. Your collection looks wonderful. Cheers

  17. YES! We have to clean this mess some time or the other. Unless we tidy up the whole thing we (I) will not have the mood to do any project. Once it is clean we can breathe easy and think clearly..better late than never..Give a pat on your shoulder Shirley,on my behalf...Good Job :)
